Canada has a long tradition of a flexible exchange rate regime. The author shows the importance of communicating with financial market actors to limit disruptions in the exchange rate, but he also recognizes that the willingness to be transparent can lead to confusion instead of clarity (p. 120).

The only way that could understand this concept was to see the embedded derivative liability as an expression of sadness that the deal was entered into in dollars and not in Rand. If the Rand went the other way, it would have been an asset, i.e. an expression of happiness. (A banker once asked me jokingly if he could lend money to a company based on the value of its embedded derivatives in its supply contracts!)

In July 1993, a pretested questionnaire and a letter describing the purpose of the study were mailed to all dentists employed by IHS (n=389) and FBoP (n=120). IHS dentists provide clinical services in 200 dental clinics in IHS/tribal hospitals or ambulatory health centers in 33 states. Within the FBoP, inmates receive dental treatment at 107 dental clinics. Of the 509 dentists who were mailed the questionnaire, 489 (96% [372 IHS and 117 FBoP]) responded. Of the 489, 194 (40%) dentists had practiced clinical dentistry in the IHS or FBoP for lt;3 years; 183 (37%), 3-9 years; and 112 (23%), [equal to or greater than] 10 years. The mean years of clinical practice were similar for dentists in both groups (5.9 years for IHS and 5,6 years for FBoP dentists; p=0.7, two-tailed t-test); 438 (90%) reported that they were practicing clinical dentistry at the time of the survey (87% IHS and 97% FBoP), and the remainder were in nonclinical positions. Almost all (474 [97%]) respondents reported ever having received a TST (365 [98%] IHS and 109 [93%] FBoP); 92% of those tested reported always having a negative test result (Table 1). Of 36 dentists who reported ever having a reactive TST, 17 (47%) reported the first reactive TST occurred after graduation from dental school. Of these 17 dentists, 14 (11 IHS and three FBoP) reported converting from a negative TST to a reactive TST.

There is also concern over householders whose alarms dont work as they forget to renew batteries. New figures show Tyne Wear Fire Brigade was called to 1,581 accidental house fires in the past year. In 60% residents got a warning from their smoke alarm.
Tamper-proof smoke alarms are to be installed in homes. Areas where the number of house fires is high are being targeted by Tyne and Wear Fire Service. Chris Lowther, community safety manager, said: In the last 12 months, we attended 1,875 house fires and of the 1,255 smoke alarms which were fitted, 141 of those were not working at the time. Smoke detectors play a vital role in giving people enough warning to get out of the house when there is a fire.

But another solution was reached that draws the Wildlife Department onto the property to help police what is now called the Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area. The arrangement calls for Weyerhaeuser to keep the 450,000 acres open to people who buy a $16 permit. The company also must help the Wildlife Department in improving animal habitat. Department officials promised to conduct fish and wildlife surveys, close some roads and seed them with grasses, help catch lawbreakers and issue permits. Fees collected are spent on improvements to the Weyerhaeuser property. Royce Meek of Broken Bow, vice president of the Oklahoma Wildlife Federation, said most sportsmen understand the need for the $16 permit. “There was grumbling about it, but all in all everyone thought it was a pretty cheap cost to be able to use the land, and have access to every bit of it,” Meek said Wednesday.
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing the creation of new regulations that expand the hunting of Canada geese in hopes of reducing the current resident population of 3.5 million by 1.2 million. As a result, the agency wants to allow states to undertake approved population control strategies, such as nest and egg destruction, trapping and culling programs and expanded hunting opportunities. “The service believes that the problems caused by resident Canada geese can be best addressed at the state level,” said agency director Steve Williams. “To that end, we are committed to providing state wildlife management agencies with as much flexibility as possible to address the issue.”

Red Jacket Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a Seneca Tribal Commander who lent support to the British during the Revolutionary War. He also fought to prevent conversions to Christianity among the Iroquios. Although Red Jacket eventually allied himself with other Indian nations in support of the British during the American Revolution, he was originally hesitant about the affiliation. This ambivalence perhaps explains why he did little fighting during the conflict. According to a number of accounts, Red Jackets reluctance to fight was perceived as cowardice by some Iroquois war leaders such as Corn-planter and Joseph Brant.After the war, Red Jacket became a principal spokesman for the Seneca people. He was present at treaty negotiations in 1794 and 1797 in which major portions of Seneca land in upstate New York were ceded or partitioned into smaller reservations. During this era, Red Jacket also became an outspoken opponent of Christianity and an advocate for preserving traditional Iroquois beliefs. His efforts to protect traditional beliefs culminated in the temporary expulsion of all Christian missionaries from Seneca territory in 1824. Red Jacket and the so-called Pagan Party were undermined in the ensuing years, however, by accusations of witchcraft and Red Jackets own problems with alcohol. In 1827, Red Jacket was deposed as a Seneca chief. He died three years later, after his own family had converted to Christianity.

But it lectures, often heavy handedly, about a lost America, dated here to the mid-1950s, a world of caring neighbors, a slow down, small-town world of simple pleasures like a slow drive in the country, where love was expressed in batted eyes and stammering speech. Granted that 1950s is a confection of Hollywood and perhaps it is an exercise in pointless nostalgia to mourn something that never really existed, it works here. When Lightning McQueen, the showboat hot-shot race car (Owen Wilson), loses a big race (his daredevil antics on the track cost him the victory) and decides brashly to eschew his racing team to head alone to the season-ending showdown race for the Piston Cup, he gets lost on a stretch of back highway, the mythic Route 66, in the deserts somewhere on the way to California. He ends up in a lonesome town, Radiator Springs, itself a cross of intersections bypassed long ago by the interstate and now settling into dust. When Lightning ends up impounded in the town and then sentenced by an unforgiving old-timer judge (Paul Newman) to community service–he must repave the stretch of broken-down highway his race car has damaged–the young kid comes to understand, slowly, the simple values that his media-driven celebrity lifestyle and virtually impenetrable narcissism have never shown him: friendship, trust, honesty. Happily, the judge turns out to be himself a relic of past racing glory and with his help and his patient (although wonderfully gruff) instruction the kid learns a thing or two about handling cars. When Lightning returns to race, he does so richly educated in the importance of tradition, the value of modesty, and the sterling quality of friendship. I would not dream of spoiling the end of the film, but in the end we learn, as with all truly significant sports films, what happens in competition pales next to the significance of what happens off field. With Lightnings newfound sensitivity, the town finds its way to a renaissance that is as believable as it is heartwarming.
